Magarao prepares Easter Angels

by Kenee Sambo

THE PARISH OF ST. ANNE traditionally observes the ‘Salubong,’ a celebration of the resurrected Jesus meeting his mother. ‘Salubong’ depicts a solemn procession led by the grieving Mother Mary shrouded in a dark veil that will come across a procession of joy led by the image of the risen Lord. Then, an angel will remove her mourner’s veil for her to see that her Son has resurrected.

For Magaraoeños, ‘Salubong’ and the Dawn Mass mark more in the celebration of Easter. This year’s celebration were organized by the Parish Lectors Ministry headed by Ms. Vita Avenido, former President of PPC, with the support of other parish organizations particularly the Daughters of Mary and the Knights of Columbus.

As of March 2, the organization in-charged recruited 14 Resurrection Angel candidates from different barangays of Magarao. These children with the support of their parents were presented to the parish priest, Msgr. Juan Buentiempo, last January 28, 2007 during the 7:30 am Mass.
Each candidate has a ‘love offering’ of P5,000.00. The collected love offerings proceed to the fund for the St. Anne Parish church projects.

The Resurrection Angel 2007 will be recognized through the drawing of lots at the parish convent on March 25, 2007. The lucky child who will be picked from the drawing of lots will be the one who will do the honor of removing the black shroud from Mary’s head.

Jesus’ resurrection signifies hope, a new beginning, where we are free of whatever separates us from God and from other people. This is God’s gift of forgiveness, it frees us from the past, allowing us to make a new start.
